This seems like a way to promote blanket design, to make design no longer personal, essentially it is anti-design. What is design if not personal? Design is specific and challenging but moreover it is whatever you want it to be. This type of applying one set of design principles to every single client in more or less the same way is the opposite of what design is. Now you could argue, how is this different from a design firm? At a design firm, aren’t you just applying the partner’s definition of design to every project they work on? The obvious difference between these two is that when you look at a design firm’s work, each project stands out, whereas with ‘groups’ like Material Design all of the work blends together until it looks like muppet barf. I used quotes around ‘group’ because it isn’t really a group. It’s as if you taught AI some basic principles of design and said: “now here are all your clients, go solve their problems.” All this is as a generator. There is no personality, it even reads as if AI wrote it, I don’t feel anything and I certainly don’t see empathy. Sure, not all people can afford a nice design firm and this feels easy and simple to them. It makes sense, just like how my portfolio website for my photography is made with Adobe Portfolio. But that was before I knew even any HTML, so of course I’m working on making my own portfolio website, handmade.
