Overview
I created this chair taking inspiration from the Rietveld Red and Blue chair. I followd the structural design of the chair with 1/2 inch basswood at a 1/8 scale. Then I using laser cutting, I created the seat and back of the chair with 3/16 inch basswood. I drilled holes at the bottom of the seat backing for chain insertion. Upon finishing the structure, I painted the chair in black and red acrylic paint. When everything was in place and finished, I connected three gold chains through the drilled holes.
For me, this project was a learning process. I elarned how to put together the structure, not just with wood glue, but creating dowels between the wooden sticks (legs) to enhance structural strength. It was difficult to work with such a small form, drilling holes into the legs of the chair to create space for the dowels. Overall, this project gave me a good understanding of both structure and the ability to be creative with the skills I learned.
