So it is high time for self reflection. Who are we? This one species on the verge of dooming so many others. The extinction of species is but one of our follies. Assuming the more conservative predictions about global warming and the impact that will have on the weather in the next hundred years. Crops will fail. Large areas of previously fertile land will become unproductive.
Massive population migrations will build up tensions that will increase strife. The last fifty years has witnessed the largest buildup of weapons capable of mass destruction that humans have ever seen, in a time of relative stability and peace. Imagine all of that power unleashed in a time of chaos. It has been business as usual, as the weapons that defend the powerful are also the weapons of oppression. It depends whose sided you are on.
These weapons are used as a means of intimidation, to force the peoples of the world to live under a yolk so that the wealthy can secure their riches off the backs of everyone else. This was done through brute force and slavery in previous epochs, where wealth meant the number of subjects that a ruler had under their control. Today we distribute that terror through the world economy.
In the minds of most people in the developed nations, capitalism works pretty well, but we do not look into the working conditions of the rest of the world, nor at the history of capitalism, before the social constraints were in place, and when there was an economic crisis every ten years or so. If you are interested what that looked like, just hold on, for the times, they are a changing.
