Step 1- Develop Your Idea

One of the more essential aspects to being an independent illustrator, or for my own case, a broke college student looking to make an income while in school, is to be able to sell work that you create throughout your school career and also outside of it.

Step 2- Discovery and Research

In this step, I researched other illustrators and what type of format they followed in order to display their artwork. The majority of the illustrators I found via the many illustrators that I follow on Instagram while some were just by knowing their name from exhibits, magazines, etc.

The first illustrator that came to my mind was Kim Jung Gi, my current favorite and most admired. Judging from his format, it’s extremely simplistic and minimal, showcasing his work and nothing else.

The second illustrator I examined was Audraauclair who is also one of my favorites. Although she didn’t have her own website and a storenvy instead, her store followed a minimalistic format with clean square prints, large logo on top, and a sidebar with her information.

Step 3- Target Audience

For this site, the main target audience would be potential customers. Directed through Instagram and other various social media websites, they would come to this site with the intent on not only viewing my work but also potentially buying them also.

Other audiences that would come into view include:

Family & Friends- This group of people would probably come across this site through my posting or link them in an email or message. Although they might also buy something, the original intent for them would mainly be to check out my work.

Other Artists- Other illustrators would visit this site in order to gather inspiration, something I do to all of my favorite illustrators very often.

Potential Employers- Since I’m always looking for internships and other opportunities, I would provide this link in order to show them my marketing skills and my initiative to sell my work and make a profit.
