Designing Programmes

Karl Gerstner

The article discusses about what is the definition of designing programmes. Karl Gerstner gives an example of the Gothic cathedral’s windows that have different patterns. Although the patterns are different, people can still tell it is from the same grid system due to the ornament and style are consistent.

It suggests that even though creators change the layout of designed objects, viewers can still understand the design came from the same designers because they use similar elements inside the grid system. There are always certain elements that are essential in their design, and those designs can’t be eliminated. The article gives several examples of using the same grid system; creators can design new patterns as long as they keep the same style and stay in the same structure. Such as Morphological Typography. It allows people to play around with the component, typeface, technique, color, size, proportion, boldness, reading direction, spacing, and so on to build a creative result. The critical thing is to find a balance between your choice and following the grid system.
