Develop Your Idea:
My goal for my portfolio website is to highlight and display the connection between the written form of journalism and visual storytelling. As a Journalism Major and Communication Design Minor, it’s important to me that my work is displayed in a way where both skills are not only featured but intertwined together. I want my website to strike a balance between a playful and professional tone, reflecting my personality while maintaining a level of credibility and respect.
Discovery and Research:
In the process of developing my idea, I turned to other professional portfolios for inspiration. I was drawn to websites that were very clean, organized, and colorful– creating a unique aesthetic. The two websites that really stood out to me were Lotta Niemen’s portfolio and Marlen Komar’s portfolio.
I would say Lotta Niemen’s website plays around more with the idea of a “traditional website”. Her menu bars are displayed on either side of the homepage, as opposed to being at the top. She also features her favorite projects on the homepage with large focused images, and a minimal amount of words.
Marlen Komar’s website is more of a classic journalist portfolio. She has menu items at the top showing her published stories, contact page, and homepage tab. One thing I appreciate about her website is how simplistic it is, while also showing a good amount of character and personality. I can easily tell from her homepage the type of stories she likes to write, the way she designs, and a little glimpse into what she might be like in person.
Target Your Audience:
My target audience of my portfolio is future employers. I want my website to serve as a space where recruiters/ employers can easily navigate, get a sense of my personality, passions, and aesthetic. I aspire to create a website that leaves a unique, fresh, and lasting impression on those who stumble upon it. I also hope that there are people in the future who may draw inspiration from the portfolio website I end up creating.
