Design Progress Sketches 2019-2021
The progress work below is part of a long string of potential projects that never made it to the light of day. I'd like to give respect to this work & designate it a place to live on this website for my own and possibly others to refernece. Below each sketch is a short description of my motives:
2020-2021 / 'Panio' (derived from the word companion) is a typeface development using a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) which is a type of accessable artifical intelligence that creates completely singular models from imput data. To create the forms of each letter I collected 1000 different type specimens and trained my own GAN to produce type variants that I then altered by hand.
2021 / The Winston Reader is an attempt at reformating a 98 year old book that was gifted to me in 2017. This book, previously owned by a child named George who scribbled all throughout the pages, is a special South Carolina edition fable book published in 1922. The illustrations by Frederick Richardson were the primary reason I decided to try and preserve the content but as I spent time laying out the pages, I came to love the specificities of designing text for children.
