Research & Destroy

Of course, depending on the person, people have different needs and desires. However, in this saturated world filled with overflowing products of people’s creativity of stupidity, designs are all made to meet consumer’s desires. “I’m more beautiful. I’ll make you happy.” Actually, we won’t need many of these. There’s no difference between a $66,800 Porsche Cayenne or a $20,00 Chevrolet Trailblazer. But even though we have products to meet our needs, we consistently want more and more comparing ourselves with others. Then, as designers, how should we respond to the psychology of these people?

When I was young, I thought designers only need to “design”, creating the visual. If a situation was given, I thought design would just fall from the sky. However, from what I have experienced so far, it’s completely different from what I imagined. Designers weren’t just creating the visuals. Once you design, you need to know the context for a given context. To do this, sometimes a designer has to be an economist, sometimes a historian, or a psychologist. Indeed, you can design without knowing everything, but would this design be perfect? Also, after designing, you need to be a writer to convey your thoughts. Because no matter how good a design is, if it’s not delivered properly, it’s value will be diminished. So the designer must be a superman. Isn’t this unfair?
