Can Jokes Bring Down Governments?
It’s important to be interested in politics to make society a better place. While, theoretically, I know that it is crucial to be interested in politics and to express one’s opinion, however, it is too boring… Originally it wasn’t possible, but because of COVID-19, I was able to vote in the 2020 South Korean legislative election. But I knew no one in the ballot. I don’t know how it is in the United States, but in Korea, we don’t really talk about politics. First of all, young people aren’t interested in politics, and for older people, it gets really intense when it comes to politics. So we refrain from talking about politics as much as possible, and because of such an atmosphere, political jokes are rare. Serious problems can be lightly solved by jokes, but in Korean society where politics itself cannot easily be accepted, jokes cannot bring down governments.
“Cute Cat Theory of Digital Activism”
There are many popular online platforms in Korea. But in
many of those platforms, political talks are restricted because
political freedom in Korea is respecting each other’s political
views without slander. So while Jokes are an active, living
and free form of disobedience, in Korea, we don’t talk. Through
jokes, we can escape from reality and make fun with it, but
maybe because I am a Korean or I am overly sarcastic, I don’t
know if these jokes can bring down the government. But even
if I become interested in politics, I don’t want to solve the
political problem with design because I still don’t know if
political memes would be taken seriously. Do you take memes
seriously?
