Shantell Martin Art

1. Intent

The intent of this website is to show her style and who Martin is as an artist as well as showcase her work.

2. Voice

Shantell Martin is known for her signature black and white drawings. Her work aims to be more than an object of admiration disconnected from its inception. Her compositions embody her internal state and the impermanence of the world around her. Martin works to draw relationships between fine art, education, design, philosophy, and technology as a cultural facilitator. She aims to push the boundaries of storytelling, visual art and technology through her work and social experimentation with physical spaces.

3. Tone

The tone of Shantell Martin's website is emphasized through big block print that almost forms a shape on its white background. It is very playful and interactive with the viewer. One's eyes jump across the screen to explore each detail. The written fonts and scattered drawn art work gives it a very friendly and inviting feel that entices viewer to explore all of the site's pages and items.

4. Brand

Shantell Martin's brand is playful and fun. She explores themes such as intersectionality, identity and play. This is done visually on her website through using her work not only as a decoration but also as a device to navigate the site. The layout and design of her website portray her brand efficently through hand drawn decorations and icons and an airy layout thats interrupted by bold chunky text.

It can be argued, however, that the layout and design of her website is less "playful" and more "formal." Other than the home page, the layout tends to lose its quirky and playful identity. It can begin to get confusing and stagnate after scrolling through pages such as "Info" and "News". Overlapping text and images get lost and the successful airy quality in her work is lacking throughout these pages.

7. Competition

It is unique to its interactive qualities with the use of animation. Playfully but also professionally, Martin's work is showcased by subject and is for sale in a simple, easy to use and read grid and category system. The brand is, for the majority of the website, cohesive and displays who Martin is as an artist.

Many other artists display their work in a very professional manner that appeals to one that is trying to purchase their work. These sites do a disjustice to their work as it displays work similarly to another artist. to add to the experience of the viewer, will more likely entice them to buy more. Through having a more visually and possibly physically interactive site, this does more for the artist by selling their work and creating an identity for themselves.
