ABOUT

Horus

Material:Stone

The horus is the god of divine kingship in Egyption. It is in the form of a falcon. The sculpture is usually displayed in the palace that shows the power of the king. The king is able to get power from the horus god and maintain his status. I remember that I've saw other sculptures like this in my art history class. There are two horus in this garden, standing in line. They provides the garden with the power of ancient Egypt in a low key form.

Sphinx

Material:Stone

Sphinx is a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion. This is a Greek version of sphinx since it is a woman. Other than that, the egyptian sphinx is a man. She has the head of a human, the body of a lion and wings of a bird. The people who are confronting her will be asked with riddles and those who can’t answer will be killed and eaten. There are two sphinx sculptures sitting in the front part of the garden. It is like they are chosen to be here to test the visitors.

Cupid

Material:Marble

When I saw this sculpture, the only figure that popped up in my head was Cupid. He was usually portrayed as an angle in a child form. But here I didn’t see his wings. He’s holding grapes instead of bow and arrows. Cupid’s location is near aphrodite. Maybe when the creators of the garden were choosing where to put the sculptures, they matched cupid and aphrodite together because they are both holding grapes and gods related to love.

Standing Girl

Material:Marble

She is stepping forward. Her cloth is blowing in the wind, which gives the piece a light and positive feeling. I can’t recognize the figure but her posture reminds me of the famous painting liberty leading the people. People don’t really pay attention to this sculpture. I spent a lot of time finding pictures about it, but only a few came out. I’m curious about this young woman. It seems that she is heading for something on the front. Is there anything on the street that she really wants?

Standing Lion

Material:Stone

Lion is the king of the beasts. Its eyes open widely, mouth slightly open. If you listen carefully, you can hear the growling of the lion, swearing sovereignty to the invaders. The scouring of the rain and erosion of the wind left marks on the sculpture. The origin color of the stone become darker and darker.

Young Woman

Material:Marble

She is heavily clothed. The drips close to her body implies her inside motion. She doesn't have any emotion on her face. This sculpture is standing quietly in the corner of the garden. Since she is less featured, it is hard to guess which figure she is. However, from her posture and her face, she is young.

Dog

Material:Stone

Unknown breed. The dog seems confused and lost in the garden. It has no companions. I feel sad for this dog. It looks like it had been starving for a few days. It is so skinny that I can almost see the bones.

Aphrodite

Material:Marble

I think she is Aphrodite. Aphrodite is the Olympian goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation. The reason that I guess she is Aphrodite is because half of her breast is exposed, which is a normal form for Aphrodite in greek sculptures. She has the waist-shift feature that usually occurs in those greek statues. The right arm is missing while her left arm is holding grapes. I usually relate grapes with Dionysus, the god of wine. But in this sculpture the figure who’s holding the grapes changed to Aphrodite.

Demeter

Material:Bronze

Demeter is the goddess of the harvest and presides over grains and the fertility of the earth. The reason that I think this one is demeter is because this is the only bronze sculpture in the garden. The golden color gives a sense of resplendent and magnificent. Her right hand is holding a water pitcher, just like she is watering the fields, blessing the ground. Meanwhile, her dressing style is more closed to a laborious peasant.

Resting Lion

Material:Stone

This lion is resting among the flowers and butterflies, which makes it a popular spot for photographers. Its head tilted skyward, staying alert, observing its territory. I still remember when I came here in the summer, I saw a small butterfly resting on the nose of the lion. The scene is lovely.

Musician

Material:Stone

He is pulling a long face. His hand is missing and I don’t actually know what he is playing. I guess he is holding a flute, which is why I called him a musician. He looks like the music is so sad that it brings him into a state of emotional resonance. Actually, he can also be other occupations such as poet. But I kind of want him to be a musician since it can explain his emotion and body language at the same time.

Horse Head

Material:Stone

It’s a small sculpture that is left in the corner. Maybe the owner of the horse is a knight, who has experienced many fights with this horse. Because the horse is brave and heroic, people admires the horse then make it into a sculpture.
