The Web’s Grain
As the technologies developed in an incredible speed, website started to change accordingly. From the pixelated, scrappy pages to high-resolution, visually attractive websites, various tools and programming languages are invented in order to achieve that. However, after seeing all of these beautifully designed website, there are things that we ignored and lost during the process of creating. As mentioned in the article, we gradually went against the web’s natural character. Somehow simple navigation icons or scrolling functions were largely eliminated for adding more visual elements and special effects. The interactions we supposed to be simple and easy for user to get. So do the information. In my opinion, a website is like a collection of information. It is a rearranging of information in order for the viewers to get it in an efficient way. The visual design of the website should contribute on the process instead of disturbing users from doing it. In other words, The form of the website should serve the content.
Website is a huge bowl of information. Designing a website is just like cooking. The first step is always prepare materials based on the menu. Leave the necessary elements on the cutting board and thinking about how to treat them. The process of editing the images and texts and slice them into different sections. Following the principles of design, the next step is to put them into the page one by one. Cooking needs every ingredient to be harmony and so does website. If there is anything that doesn’t make sense, you immediately get it. It is not about the shape of the vegetables or the color of the soup, it is about every decision that made the dish. The website in the past is like the food that your grandma cooked. Even though it might not look good, you still remembered the first time you tasted it. The website now is like the one in a fancy restaurant, it looks extravagant but you feel something is not there. It seems that it is hard for us to find a balance in between. However, website design is not cooking eventually. The information can be changed and updated. The website can even be trendy and fashionable. But when it comes to the function and crucial designs, I think it is important to stay with the information that website wants to convey while being clear about that.
Nevertheless, balancing between the visuals and the real content will not be easy. The reason that websites with exaggerated visuals are popular is because they fit the public aesthetic. Not all of the users are designers. They stays with things that attract their eyes. When designers trying to decide how to fit the commercial needs, they might just fall into the wrong side and we can see the results of that when browsing. Therefore, I think it is good for me to step back and forth and thinking about this topic because I want to do things that are not only visually satisfying, but also reasonable.
