Cultural Perspective
I investigated the evolution of my identity. Over the years, I moved geographically from India to the UK to the US, learning from different cultures and experiences that shaped who I am today. Born and raised in India until the last two years of high school, I was protected and comfortable in my bubble, with my parents shielding me from the real world. Moving to boarding school in the UK exposed me to harsh realities but also provided unforgettable experiences and bonds. It taught me to stand on my own two feet and blossom into who I am today.
I wanted to incorporate the geographical impact on my identity in my garment. I explored layers, different cultural fabrics, and maps to show the shift in geography. For India, I displayed innocence and ignorance through traditional Indian fabric. For the UK, I aimed to represent my growth and exposure to experiences that shaped me. I drew inspiration from my UK school uniform, including ties and button-down shirts.
I developed a garment that transformed to reflect the evolution of my identity. This required exploring and researching how to create a transformable dress and selecting appropriate materials.
