The 12 Chinese Zodiac Heads:
Unity in Diversity

The installation consists of twelve animal heads, representative of the zodiac signs still prevalent within China. Each head is intricately crafted, reflecting a deep understanding of the historical and cultural significance of the zodiac in Chinese culture. In a poignant juxtaposition, the remaining five heads, representing animals not currently found in China are symbolically absent, yet their presence is felt through the ropes tying the entire collection together. This represents the inseparability and collective identity of these zodiac signs, highlighting their role as a bridge between past and present, and across various heritage.

This project is not merely a restating of traditional symbols but a critical commentary on the dynamic interplay between cultural preservation and contemporary interpretation. The use of ropes to bind the zodiac heads symbolizes the unbreakable link between past and present, the rough and intangible, and the local and global dimensions of cultural heritage. Through this installation, I aim to invite viewers to contemplate the enduring impact of these symbols on Chinese identity and their evolving relevance in a rapidly changing world.
