a handmade web by j.r. carpenter

I found it really interesting to see the idea of "DIY" web put into words. The idea of some websites being "handmade" something I've thought about a lot, but never had a particular word for.

I would be curious to know what the web might look like if more people were to create their own websites, rather than websites that provide a framwork for you, like Wix. I'm also curious about people that are "webmasters" on the bottom of some websites. What is the role of a webmaster? Does it imply a site that is closer to being DIY than ones ran by a company? Who are the people providing frameworks to companies like Wix? How are they compensated? How are sites like Shopify set up with the high amounts of user interaction and purchasing? Can those sites be done in a DIY function without using a plug-in from a company like Shopify?
