Designing for the Web
8 Steps

Expectations and Intent

My expectations for the course are to expand my motion and web design skills and learn the fundamentals of what makes a portfolio or website successful. I also want to use my time at Port Design to connect with other creatives and share my work.

My intent is to let employers and designers see my skills in visual storytelling and motion graphics through a clean and organized display of my work. I want my portfolio to feel clear and easy to understand, and I want the design of the website itself to show how my abilities extend beyond the projects.

Key Challenges:

  • Present a coherent narrative about my aesthetic.
  • Showcase my work through a clear and user-friendly layout.
  • Ensure visitors have an engaging experience.

Voice and Tone

I want the voice of my website to feel conversational and energetic. It should be professional without feeling stiff, and it should show my personality through the visuals and the way the content is written. Each page may shift slightly, but the overall voice should stay friendly and approachable.

The tone should change depending on the page. The About page will feel more personal, while the portfolio pages should feel confident and straightforward. The tone should always support the content, of course.

My Brand

The brand should feel youthful and creative. It should stay consistent across the site and communicate a modern sense of professionalism while still feeling relaxed and expressive.

User Needs:

Content Strategy: Tell the story behind each project, keep language professional but relatable, and let my personality come through in the "About Me" section.

Persona

Employers in the design industry

Employers visit my website to understand my skill level and see how I approach visual storytelling and motion design. They want to quickly assess the quality of my work and decide whether I would be a strong fit for their team or projects.

Web design and creative industry colleagues

Colleagues come to my site to explore what I am currently working on and get a sense of my style. They may be interested in collaborating, so they look for clarity, personality, and a shared creative direction.

Potential partners or clients

Partners and clients visit my website to see if my aesthetic and process match what they need. They look for professionalism, consistency, and a clear sense of how I develop and execute visual ideas.

Students or emerging creatives

I hope students and newer creatives visit my site to learn from my process and find inspiration in my work, and appreciate approachable writing, clear project explanations, and a portfolio that feels polished but still accessible.
