Planetary Harmonies
Johannes Kepler’s three laws, published in Nova Astronomiae (1609) and Harmonices Mundi (1619), revolutionized astronomy by replacing circular orbits with ellipses and revealing profound mathematical harmony in planetary motion, which Kepler interpreted as the “Music of the Spheres.”
- First Law (Ellipses): Planets orbit the sun in ellipses with the Sun at one focus, introducing eccentricity absent in Ptolemy/Copernicus circles
- Second Law (Equal Areas): A line from planet to sun sweeps equal area in equal times, implying variable speeds, like accelerating notes in a cosmic scale
- Third Law (Harmonic): The square of orbital periods is proportional to the cube of semi-major axes, linking timing to distance in ratios evoking Pythagorean intervals
