Designer

Shih-Ting, Chien is a Taiwanese fashion designer currently based in New York City, USA.

Interviewer: Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up? What were you like as a child?

Shih-Ting: I'm a fashion designer currently studying in NYC. I grew up in Taipei, Taiwan. Just like other big cities, it is busy, crowded, has a lot of traffic, but of course it's not a megacity like NYC. We have unique aboriginal culture, warm weather, extraordinary geographics and it is an island surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. I enjoy my life journey in New York, I'm planning to write exclusive fashion design notes and sharelife journals on Instagram.

Solstice: How did you get into fashion design?

Shih-Ting: During my time at university, I often found myself admiring my peers in the Fashion Design Department. They had the ability to create captivating sketches and stunning collections as part of their semester projects. However, I hesitated to pursue a career in design and instead chose to become an auditor after graduation. Despite my career choice, my true passion remained firmly rooted in the field of fashion design. Eventually, I made a bold decision to follow my passion. I left my auditing job, took courses at a fashion studio in Taipei, and began preparing my portfolio for a fashion degree application.

Solstice: Which designers do you look up to?

Shih-Ting: Alexander McQueen has been a major influence in my desire to become a fashion designer. His unique designs and fearless approach to fashion have inspired me to push the boundaries and challenge the norm in my own work. From his iconic "bumster" pants to his avant-garde collections, McQueen was never afraid to take risks and push the limits of fashion. His passion for craftsmanship and attention to detail is something that I strive for in my own designs. Furthermore, McQueen's ability to tell a story through his collections and create a visual narrative is something that I admire and aspire to achieve in my own work. In short, Alexander McQueen has taught me the importance of being bold and fearless in fashion, and has inspired me to push the boundaries and create truly unique and innovative designs.
