Verticle Reading

A distant reading without enough distance; perhaps the hardest thing in modern society is slowly looking into something in depth. Especially within the web that expands infinitely, exploring something in depth is indeed difficult. Because every minute, every second, and even this moment when I’m typing each c-h-a-r-e-c-t-e-r-s, something new is being born into the web. So to see everything on the web, it is inevitable that you have to skim through stuff as if you are going through the Facebook feed. In that sense, the web is like Janus. The web infinitely expands, but at the same time to know something in depth you must hold your breath and go deep into the endless ocean of information. So I think this reading goes beyond simply analyzing vast information to suggest a different direction in treating the web. Then what is the essence of the web that lays beneath the screen?

Being honest, when I read the Vertical Reading, my first impression was, “So what?” I have somewhat an impatient personality like any Korean, so I tend to take in everything as quickly and efficiently as possible. So this reading, by a fellow Korean was honestly frustrating, it’s like “eating one million sweet potatoes” as the Korean web would express. However, besides the TMI (Too Much Information), the frivolous information in this reading, looking deeply into the Vertical Reading (as this reading explores the Roma Publication website), it seems to have some sort of moral lesson.

So the lesson I have learned from reading is not something obvious like “explore data and find something new within” like my Python professor’s “Data is the most valuable thing a human can have.” But it is “Even if you can’t see a clear path in your life, just look at life in a distant without enough distant.” In the 21st century and New York, everything just passes by so fast. So instead of simply reading from the perspective of the web, what is Vertical reading in life general?

멀지 않은 데서 멀리 읽는, 천천히 무언가를 깊이 있게 들여다보는 것이야말로 현대 사회에서 가장 어려운 일이 아닐까 싶다. 특히 웹이라는 무한히 확장하는 존재 안에서 한 가지를 심도(깊이) 있게 보는 것은 참 힘든 일이다. 왜냐하면, 웹에서는 매분 매초 그리고 내가 한자 한자 쓰고 있는 지금에도 무언가 새로 탄생하고 있기 때문이다. 그래서 웹의 그 모든 것을 다 보기 위해서는 어쩔 수 없이 페이스북 피드를 보듯이 훅훅 넘겨야 하는 것이 아닐까? 그런 의미에서 웹이라는 존재는 양면의 동전과 같다. 웹은 끝없이 펼쳐나가는 동시에, 어떤 것을 깊이 알기 위해서는 숨을 꾹욱 참고 웹의 바다 깊이 들어가야 한다. 그래서 이 글이야말로 단순히 정보를 분석하는 것에서 벗어나 웹을 대하는 다른 방향성을 제시하는 것이 아닐까? 그럼 지금 눈 앞에 보이는 웹 깊숙히 숨어있는 웹의 본질은 무엇일까?

사실 이 글을 읽었을 때 내 첫 감상문은, “그래서 어쩌라고”였다. 나는 여느 한국인처럼 참 조급한 성격을 가졌다, 그래서 당장 보이는 것을 최대한 효율적으로 빠르게 받아들이고  넘어간다. 그래서 같은 한국인이 쓴 이 글은 참 툭 터놓고 말해서 정말로 답답하다, 흔히 한국의 웹에서 표현하듯이 “고구마를 백만 개먹는 느낌”이었다. 그렇지만 단순히 이 글을  TMI (Too Much Information)을 뿌리는 표면적인 묘사에서 벗어나, 깊이 살펴보면 (이 글이 로마 퍼블리케이션이라는 웹사이트를 분석하듯이), 일종의 교훈이 있는 것 같다 (어디서나 나 혼자 만이 도출한 결론이다).

그래서 내가 이 글을 읽으면서 받아들인 교훈이라면 교훈이라고 할 수 있는 사실은 나의 파이썬 교수가 말한 “데이터야말로 사람이 가질 수 있는 가장 큰 자산이다”처럼 “정보를 면밀히 분석하며 그 속에서 깨달음을 얻자”와 같은 뻔한 이야기가 아니다. 내가 얻은 교훈은 “삶을 살아가는 데 있어서 당장 무슨 결론을 얻지 않더라도, 인생을 멀지 않은 데서 멀리 보자”다. 21세기, 그리고 특히 뉴욕에서는 모든 것이 다 빠르게 빠르게 지나간다,  그렇지만 이렇게 정신없이 달려가다 보면 금세 지치기 마련이다. 그래서 단순히 이 글을 웹의 입장에서 바라보는 대신 인생에 대입해서 볼때 삶에서 가로 읽기란 무엇인까?
