KAMALA HARRIS
(CURRENT VP OF THE UNITED STATES)
- Kamala Harris took office on January 20, 2021, as vice president of the United States in the Democratic administration of Pres. Joe Biden. Before taking office, Harris represented California in the U.S. Senate (2017–21); she was the first Indian American to serve as a U.S. senator as well as the second Black American woman. Harris was previously California's attorney general (2011–17).
- In 2010 Harris became the first female and the first Black American to be elected attorney general of California; the election was so close that her Republican opponent, Steve Cooley, declared victory on election night, only to concede three weeks later after all the ballots had been counted, revealing that Harris had won by a margin of less than 1 percent.
- As Vice President, she has worked to bring people together to advance opportunity, deliver for families, and protect fundamental freedoms across the country.
