ABOUT BLOSSOMING

BACKGROUND

Blossoming is a 4ft tall floor lamp that features 1/4 inch copper pipes curved and wrapped in draping copper mesh dress, along with cherry wood bases that provide stability. The copper wires are cross-stitched, symbolizing the societal constraints that can hinder a vulnerable person's attempt to piece themselves back together. The serene amber lights emitted from both the top and bottom of the lamp are intended to illuminate the interior and refract the exterior. It conveys a sense of energy that reflects the concept of breaking free. Adorning both light bulbs are layers of draping copper to accentuate the forms and diffuse the light. This lamp can serve as a centerpiece in a windowless room with minimal furniture surrounding it, but not directly in its space. It’s suitable for anyone who desires a unique lighting fixture providing both functional and aesthetic value.

STRATEGY

I created sketches that were all variations of draping, curved, and tall forms. Through investigating the forms of each one, I started noting what texture and weight I wanted for the material.
I decided on something with a fabric quality that would be a sustainable alternative. I was immediately drawn to copper mesh and ordered 13x48 inches to sample.
I made miniature models and began experimenting with the malleability and stabillity of this chosen material. I molded the copper mesh against a small clay mannequin to create a figure in a dress form.
I felt really inspired by the appearance of this and began researching similar ideas to get a sense of how to make it stand like a floor lamp.
For the stand, I chose copper pipes to connect it to the copper mesh. I realized I wanted only curved forms, so I would bend the pipes to follow the form of the figure.
To make the dress as long as the 4ft pipes, I stitched sample pieces of copper mesh together horizontally using copper wire to cross stitch.
I used a real 5 ft mannequin as a mold to make the form of the figure
To maintain the stability of the copper pipes, I drilled ⅜ inch holes 1 inch deep into a 2 inch thick pieces of cherry wood. The top base was 8 x 2 inches and the bottom was 12 x 2 inches.
Two light bulb wires were interconnected and inserted into the pipes with one bulb on top facing downward and one bulb on the bottom facing upward. The light would meet in the middle and illuminate the copper mesh dress form.
To prevent glare, I encased both bulbs in a long layer of copper mesh, which added extra form to the dress-like drapery.
After balancing the height of both copper pipes, I used a whip stitch to attach parts of the copper mesh to the pipes to help the flow of the draping and hold shape.

OBJECTIVE

Blossoming was designed to resemble a visually striking piece of art that doubles as an illuminating fixture. A figure of a woman is embodied, but the message behind this luminaire speaks volumes to a broader audience. The dress form created by the copper mesh material emulates movement, showcased by various drapes and crinkles. Extra layers of mesh envelop the light bulbs and work to diffuse its light, resulting in a warm, amber glow that brings to mind a flickering flame. This unique lighting effect is more than just visually stunning - it also serves as a powerful symbol of the inner fire that burns within a blossoming figure, one who is breaking free from the suffocating constraints of societal norms. The figure represented by the lamp is a testament to the human spirit, embodying all those who struggle to escape the restrictions placed upon them by society. Adding to the powerful narrative is the cross-stitching present on the dress form. This intricate stitching represents the effort required to mend oneself after enduring expectations and feeling trapped.The monochromatic color palette accomplished through the combination of copper and cherry wood permits the materials to retain a subdued appearance while effectively conveying the message of Blossoming.

The copper mesh, along with the layers that envelop the bulbs, refracts the light, producing a captivating fiery effect that further accentuates the lamp's symbolism. The amber light against the copper material refracts in such a dramatic way while achieving a serene glow as it diffuses. The curvatures of the copper pipes are bent in two opposing directions to follow the contours of the drapery and act as a spine for the dress. This impacts the distribution of light as the angles influence how light reflects and refracts off of the surface. These dynamic forms augment the feeling of being engulfed by the fiery light. To achieve a spinal texture, copper wire is used to fasten the copper mesh onto the copper pipes. This texturing will add an extra dimension to the luminaire, as the ridges and grooves create shadows and highlights that add depth to the piece. This design choice enhances how the blossoming figure is completely consumed by the inner fire, symbolizing the dominating force of individuality and self-expression.

The intention of this luminaire design is to create a warm and comforting ambiance with the use of amber light that emits a soft glow against the texture of copper mesh. To balance the right amount of luminous intensity, I adorned the amber light bulbs with extra layers of copper mesh within the dress. This added a volume to the overall sculpture and made the refraction of light really dimensional. It’s great for a widespace where one wants to unwind and relax. This is a great alternative from harsher light and it can illuminate an entire space as it's 4 feet tall. The utilization of copper material imparts an aura of refinement and grace to the luminaire, harmoniously drapes, curves, and reacts intensely to the warm amber light. The intersection of the copper with the amber works to cultivate a diffused glow of orange that resembles the look of fire, adding a satisfying charm that showcases the theme of blossoming.

USER GROUP

I imagine the user would have more of a feminine taste in terms of aesthetics. The color of the luminaire might cater less to the male demographic but both genders might find intrigue in the romantic and subtle refraction of amber light with the copper hue of the mesh. The age demographic might cater more between 18-65. The daintiness of the dress is very playful yet it still has an elegant sophistication. I’d hope that the upper class- wealthy people might find this luminaire to be fitting for their space. The decor resembles a subtle take on Rococo style furniture through the asymmetry, reflective materials and organic motifs.

CONTEXT

This luminaire could beautify any large open space, such as a spacious living room or an expansive foyer. With its warm amber lighting, it creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere, evoking relaxation and a peaceful setting both alone or with company. The use of copper material adds a unique and eye-catching element to the decor, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal. To fully appreciate its elegance, it's crucial to display the luminaire in a minimalistic space that isn't cluttered with furniture or other distractions. A hotel lobby or a contemporary home with simple and clean lines would be ideal locations apart from an expensive mansion space. The ambiance it creates is very mellow. It's essential to place the luminaire indoors to allow the light to illuminate the space fully. A windowless area like a cozy lounge or an elegant restaurant would enhance the overall effect of the lighting, creating a more intimate and romantic atmosphere. With its sophisticated design and warm lighting, this luminaire is sure to be a conversation starter and a stunning addition to any space.
