What is yoga?

As Patanjali put it, only if you move out of your mind will you be able to understand the mind. Yoga is the unity of the mind, body and soul through various practice that enable one to lead a spiritual life.

The Eight Limbs of Ashtanga Yoga

The eight limbs forms the basis of Ashtanga yoga that guides yogis to Samadhi through a systematic methodology and analysis of releasing the mind.

1. Yama
The disappearence of all supressions; it is how you deal with yourself in reference to the world around you.

Ahimsa:
Practicing non-violence which transforms into love for all.
Satya:
Truthfulness
Asteya:
When one is completely established in non-theft from one's own intention and of others posessions.
Brahmacharya:
The transformation of one's sexual energy into non-duality such that all possible perversions are released and gain vitality and energy. Aparigraha:
Not posessing anything that gives suffering for someone; abstension from greed.

2. Niyama
Freedom above all observances; How you deal with thoughts and emotions within you.

Saucha:
The purity of thoughts lead to the purity of mind. Don't be judgemental about the body. Through the purity of thoughts arises the power of concentration, cheerfulness and control of the senses.
Santosha:
Contentment; not being happy or sad and enjoying every moment of being in conciousness.
Tapas:
Only performing with intention and focused action through the mastery of active and cognitive senses.
Swadhyaya:
Slef-rememberence and self-awareness; the act of studying yourself to be revealed.

3. Asana
Asana means 'to take seat here' in Sanskrit. A healthy and strong system is essential, which is what asanas provides. Practicing these poses regulates the body system and steadies the mind so that one is calm and can operate in the most efficient manner possible. There are a total of 840,000 asanas in total.

4. Pranayama
Prana is the energy that is formed from the bonds between molecules. Yama means to recharge and energize. Pranayama is the pratice of expanding prana without the movement of thoughts through different exercises focued on the breath. It is a technique for a gradual path to enlightenment.

5. Pratyahara

The widthrawal of the senses from objects and subjectsand moving the conciousness inwards. It is the act of not taking anything in through the 5 senses as it is a constant distraction. The mind is constantly searching for instant bliss from senses which prevents one from being able to experience inner bliss.

6. Dharana

The ability to direct your mind to one thought and hold it there for a long time. It could be an external object or an internal idea but this practice allows your mind to be able to create things in a very short amount of time due to high levels of concentration.

7. Dhyana

Meditation: When the thoughts are moving through your head but none of them are seaking attention. Dhyana cannot be forced, it just happens because it is a state.

8. Samadhi

Samadhi means coming into the same frequency of nature and space. The mind is in its most natural state and thoughts freeze. Samadhi is the state when one reaches enlightenment and is the ultimate goal in life.
