"Comfort women" is a euphemism coined by the Imperial Japanese military for the women and girls they trafficked into sexual slavery between 1932 and 1945. Estimates range up to 200,000 women enslaved, with the great majority from Korea. Women were lured with false promises of factory work or nursing jobs โ others were simply abducted. According to Britannica, it has been described as a massive human trafficking scheme operated by the Japanese military. Many women died from mistreatment. Those who survived often faced rejection from their own families and communities when they returned home.
