Tension and compression allow for movability and can greatly transform deign. My goal for this project was to use tension and compression tactics to create a table that would have the capability of moving up and down. The height of this table can be altered for numerous different chair styles, or even lowered to be used as a coffee table. This versatility is made possible by each spoke being strung together. When this string is pulled tighter, the table top rises. The string creates tension between each spoke while the table top compresses these spokes downward. The middle wooden circle maintains the geometric shape by keeping each spoke spaced evenly. I constructed this prototype with plywood, wooden dowels, copper wire, fishing line, thumbtacks, and plexiglass.
