Designing Symbols
Spring 2015
For this project, I was prompted to use my two initials and one symbol to create a monogram. I chose the hashtag as my symbol and chose a serif font for my two initials.
I layered the two letters on top of one another and used the base of the 'L' as a crossbar for the 'A.' I saw an opportunity to coordinate the hashtag where these two letters meet. I did this by creating a thin, offset line to follow the letters' edges, creating a hashtag naturally. I then altered this by adding space so the hashtag would pop out. Color was my last step. I chose four strong colors that would work well with grey and also be able to stand on their own.
After the logo was finished, I could then choose a business drection to push this in. Because the hashtag is so prevalent in today's youth culture, I felt as though this design would appeal to kids. I paired the monogram with a sans serif "Advanced Learning" to create an educational facility that would specialize in different learning techniques for students who needed extra help. Each of the four colors I chose represent a different field of study which could be used to oragnize kids into their correct learning departments.
